❄️ MY ITALY: A 10-Day Winter Road Trip (South to North)

To be honest, I thought I had seen enough of Italy after my first visit. But I was wrong. The moment I got home, I found myself missing the smell of fresh espresso and the quiet of the medieval squares. So, I packed my bags again! This time, I promised myself and my family that we’d find the “real” Italy—the one far away from the madness of Rome’s crowds or the expensive gondolas in Venice.

I wanted to find those secret spots that are usually so hard to pin down on a map. From the ancient stone caves in the South to the sharp, snowy peaks of the Dolomites, this journey was the soul-recharge we all needed.

Day 1: The City of Stone (Matera, Basilicata)

Start your trip in Matera, one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. Its “Sassi” (cave dwellings) glow like gold at sunset. For me, walking through Matera feels like stepping into a biblical film set. It’s a labyrinth of caves, rock churches, and hidden courtyards.

  • Attractions: * Pro (Active): Hike the Murgia Timone trail across the suspension bridge.

Day 2: Presepe on the Rocks (Castelmezzano, Basilicata)

After my morning coffee and a hot croissant, I drove to this vertical village where houses are wedged into the sandstone spires of the Lucanian Dolomites. In winter, the village looks like a living nativity scene.

A strategic day to break the drive North. I had lunch by the sea in Molise, followed by a visit to a medieval fortress in Abruzzo. Termoli offers a lovely, “Instagrammable” colorful old town, while Civitella is home to the largest Bourbon fortress in Europe.

I stopped in the capital of food before heading to the mist-covered castles of Piacenza. I enjoyed the vibe of Bologna’s markets so much I didn’t want to leave! Then, we retreated to the romantic, foggy silence of Castell’Arquato.

Food & Dessert: Tortellini in Brodo (in Bologna) and Sbrisolona (hazelnut cake).
